January 18, 2013

We are still getting used to writing 2013! It has been a busy and fun couple of weeks!

In Science, we have been learning about magnets in the science lab and in the classroom.-Charley  We discovered that magnets do not have to touch something to pick it up.- Elise  We discovered that donut magnets can float if you put the sides of opposite poles together, while on a pole.- Emma  We learned how to spin a magnet without touching it by pushing the same poles near each other.- Sonia  We read a book that told us long ago, a man found a rock that was magnetic.  It is called Magnetite.- Tatiana

We began our Reading Adventure, earning reading tickets by reading out loud for at least 15 minutes.- Francesca  We enjoyed reading to the parent volunteers on Wednesdays!- Jonah  Isabel's dad read the books we chose to us on Thursday.- Hersh  We are learning about Robert Munsch. We read a book and watched a video of one of his books.- Emma  One of the books on movie was about a little girl who kept picking candy while they were shopping and so her dad told her to stay in one spot and not move.  They thought she was a doll and put a price tag on her and put her on a shelf.  Her dad found her and put her in the shelf.  They wouldn't let him leave with her without paying for her first!  It was so funny!- Isabel We used the SmartBoard to go to Robert Munsch's website and learn more about him and how he became a children's author.- Julian  We read Thomas' Snowsuit- it is funny!- Khaila

In Social Studies, we have been reading books and learning about Martin Luther King, Jr.- Isabel  His birthday is January 15th but we observe him on Monday, January 21st this year.- Sonia  We went to an assembly by the second graders about Marin Luther King.  We all sang a song called Free At Last.- Tatiana

In Math, we learned and practiced addition strategies- doubles, doubles +1, and doubles +2.- Libby

In Music, we are learning about the instruments played in an orchestra.  We listening to the sounds each make by pressing their picture on the SmartBoard.- Charley

We made snowman faces with either hats or earmuffs and either gloves or mittens.  Then we wrote a paragraph describing our snowman for our friends to guess.- Elise  We made snowflakes out of sparkly paper and wrote a poem about how we are special.- Charlie
